Pictures of King penguins in the wild nature of these unusual islands near Antarctica.
King Penguins breed on the subantarctic islands and over 1,000,000 pairs breed on South Georgia Island. Huge colonies can be seen on St. Andrews Bay, Gold Harbour, Fortuna Bay and Salisbury Plain.
Photos were taken on a Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris tour to this fantastic Subantarctic island in the South Attlantic Ocean near Antarctica in 2003 and 2008.

Huge King penguin colonies.
The number of penguins are breathtaking. Walking into the colonies are of cource not allowed, but just standing on the beach is overwhelming.
The sound and smell is unforgettable. |

King penguin hill
The King penguin colony at St. Andrews Bay in South Georgia Island is one of the largest and has over 100,000 birds.King penguins eat small fish, mainly lanternfish, and squid and rely less than most Southern Ocean predators on krill and other crustaceans.
